Washington National Cathedral Gargoyles_2010_02662_ireneabdouphotography.com.jpg

The Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC is home to more than 200 stone-carved gargoyles. Here, a gargoyle of Vincent Palombo whistling at the girls at the girls school across the way is yelled at by the accompanying gargoyle of Dean Saylor. The purpose of the gargoyles were to both keep evil out of the cathedral and to serve as a water drainage system in torrential rain - the water pours out of the mouth of the gargoyle.
