Visitors participate in a tour of the gargoyles at the Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC. The cathedral is home to more than 200 stone-carved gargoyles. The purpose of the gargoyles were to both keep evil out of the cathedral and to serve as a water drainage system in torrential rain - the water pours out of the mouth of the gargoyle.
