The bloated stomach, thin arms, and red/orange hair of this Fulani child in the small village of Bele Kwara in southwestern Niger indicate malnutrition and intestinal worms. Of every 1,000 live births in Niger, 256 children die before reaching the age of 5 due to malnutrition and other diseases. In fact, Niger ranks 174th of 177 countries on the United Nations Development Program's Human Development Index.
