This gargoyle was carved in honor of the Washington National Cathedral's "Master Carver." The gargoyle holds onto his hat to avoid "blowing his top," which the Master Carver was known to do. The Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC is home to more than 200 stone-carved gargoyles. The purpose of the gargoyles were to both keep evil out of the cathedral and to serve as a water drainage system in torrential rain - the water pours out of the mouth of the gargoyle.
