Washington National Cathedral Gargoyles_2010_02648_ireneabdouphotography.com.jpg
A serpent gargoyle rests beneath the quatrefoil. The Washington National Cathedral in Washington, DC is home to more than 200 stone-carved gargoyles. The purpose of the gargoyles were to both keep evil out of the cathedral and to serve as a water drainage system in torrential rain - the water pours out of the mouth of the gargoyle.
