In the Fulani village of Jolooga in northern Burkina Faso, a girl sits on a traditional bed in a house made of handwoven straw mats supported by thin sticks of wood. Additional straw mats serve as a mattress. The Fulani are traditionally nomadic pastoralists, crisscrossing the Sahel season after season, year after year, in search of fresh water and green pastures. This house can be disassembled at will, the mats rolled up and loaded onto camel or donkey cart, and reassembled at a new location. This is a dry season house. When the rains come, the decorative mats will be stored safely away from water, and a different kind of straw house built.
